St. Louis German Social Groups

In the 19th century, Germans comprised the largest immigrant group in St. Louis, Missouri. In their new home they enthusiastically formed groups for different purposes. Some groups published histories or left organizational records.

"Landsmannschaftliche" Vereins

“Landsmannschaftliche” Vereins (or Vereine) were groups formed by people who had emigrated from the same locale. Many had a component of mutual support and aid for distressed compatriots; they could also include women's groups, choirs, or card clubs.
